Faculty of Education, Education International Office - 3rd International Seminar Series
June 5th and 6th, 2003
In light of recent world events, this timely public seminar will feature internationally renowned specialists who will explore the relationship between Islamic secular and religious education and the forces of democracy and modernity in Islamic societies. Speakers will examine the effects of Islamic education processes on, among other things, constitutionality, pluralism, the rule of law, gender equality, the nation state, science and technology, and their implications for domestic and international human security.
The two day seminar will be of interest to the general public, educators and students from a wide range of learning institutions, journalists, politicians, government officials, and members of the clergy who desire a deeper understanding of those intellectual forces shaping contemporary Islamic thought.
A report on seminar deliberations will be submitted to the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) to provide non-government input into foreign policy development. Edited versions of the seminar discussions are to be posted on the McGill and DFAIT web sites.
This seminar is being co-sponsored by McGill University's Faculty of Education and the Institute of Islamic Studies. We gratefully acknowledge that financial support for the seminar has been provided by the Canadian Centre for Foreign Policy Development in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT).
