The Task

You have just been the first to witness very sensitive information from Nasa.  In order to help your family move to a new location, you will need to prepare a package with information on your new place of residence.  You will need to include general information about the selected destination, areas of historical and recreational interest, and a choice of travel arrangements in your information package.  You could present the information in the form of a pamphlet or a PowerPoint Presentation.  As a mock scenario, you will be presenting your findings to the class as if they were your families.  Keep in mind that the destination you choose will be your new home so make sure you choose a location that accomodates everyone's needs (i.e. schools for you and your siblings were necessary, places of employment for your parents, affordable housing, etc.)

The Process

  • The group's first task is to decide where you and your families will be relocating to. Take a group vote to see which place is of greatest interest to everyone.
  • Once a location has been chosen, you will need to assign individual roles to each member.
The roles consist of the following:

Destination Coordinator:

The coordinator's main task is to provide basic information about the place where you will be relocating to. Here is some of the information the coordinator will need to provide about your new place.

  • a detailed map of the destination
  • geographic, demographic, and environmental descriptions
  • population and weather reports
  • a list of major cities
  • language(s) spoken
  • forms of government
  • the currency used
 Historian/Tour Guide:

The historian/tour guide wll need to do a bit of historical research about your new destination. He/she will be responsible for providing a brief history of the destination, in addition to finding areas of historical or trivial interest within the desired destination. The historian's should research and include the following:

  • specific historical information
  • a list of available tours that offer tourists an opportunity to site see
  • a price list and schedule of tours

 Recreation Director:

Everyone likes to enjoy their new cities, so the recreation director has an important job. He/she needs to find the hot spots and places of interest at the new destination. Remember, not everyone is alike. Some people prefer dining and movies while others prefer nature walks and long bicycle rides.  Some people are early risers, while others like to sleep in late. The recreation director needs to research and identify the following:

  • activities varying from indoor to outdoor, land to water, dawn to dusk
  • names and locations of areas of interest (recreation, dining, etc.)
  • maps, schedules, and prices for activities if available
  • any other specific instructions or restrictions to accompany activities

 Travel Agent:

The travel agent also has a very important job. Without his/her help, you and your family will not be able to get to your new destination. The travel agent needs to shop around and find the best prices for the following:

  • transportation to destination
  • transportation within destination (car rental, subway, bus, etc.)
  • lodging accommodations/housing
  • dining accommodations

The travel agent must remember that they are looking for the most affordable arrangements possible yet at the same time, you want to make sure your families are comfortable and well taken care of as well.

Conclusion

After having completed this webquest, you should be able to identify at least one new country and be able to know some of the main characteristics about it (its location, main  language, currency, etc.). You should be able to find all your information by looking through various reference books or by searching the internet. There is alot of information available on the internet so be sure to choose websites that are suitable for this sort assignment.

Keep in mind that this assignment requires you to work in teams; therefore, pay close attention to your fellow group members and offer assistance if needed. You must remember that even though you are being evaluated individually, your final product is a reflection of the group's effort.

Final touches: Make sure that you include a brief summary of the new destination in your conclusion. Mention the most imporant characteristics of this destination and explain what new information you have learned during your research. Explain how this location differs from where you live now. Remember to discuss your findings with your teammates.  As a final thought, discuss as a group whether or not you think you have made a good decision for you and your families.  Is it a location you believe you will be able to live in for several years?  What is the best and/or worst quality about your desination?  What will you miss most about your current home compared to your new home?
