Announcing the Education Graduate Students’ Society’s

I’m not just an academic! (INJA) workshops

EGSS recognizes the diversity of graduate students in McGill’s Faculty of Education, and we would like to provide you with the opportunity to share some of the skills, experience and personality which may be hidden beneath your academic persona.

We invite grad students to lead a workshop of 1 – 2 hours on any topic/theme/activity. The only guidelines to follow are that workshops must be:

CREATIVE
ENGAGING
STUDENT-LED
COMMUNITY-DEVELOPING

Not only is this a great opportunity to build on your CV, but you will also get to practice your presentation and facilitation skills. Students will receive an honorarium of $50. EGSS will also provide snacks and cover the costs of any materials for the workshop (up to $30). In order to lead a workshop, please email Erin Sirett, erin.sirett@mail.mcgill.ca, with an abstract of your workshop and how it fulfills the four criteria above. (max. 1/2 page). There is no deadline for submission, although you should submit at least 1 month before you would like the workshop to take place.

Email Erin soon, as space is limited to just one workshop per month!

The first INJA workshop will be led by Katie MacEntee (PhD, DISE) Monday, November 16 from 2:30-4:30pm in room 338

Cut and Paste Diversity: Collage As Research in the Faculty of Education

Within research, collage has a variety of uses. It can be a prompt, a method of analysis, a tool for discovery, field notes, a tool for knowledge production, a means of knowledge transmission/dissemination, and more. During this workshop I think collage will best suit us as a reflective tool. After a short introduction on collage as a participatory arts-based research technique, individuals will have the opportunity to make their own collages while thinking about how the McGill Faculty of Education is a site of diversity and (potential) exchange. Following the collaging, we will do a short group activity to help further probe how and what the collages can tell us about ourselves and our topic. In this sense, the workshop will be VERY interactive, participants should come with an open mind, ready to take part in some lively discussion as well as be ready for some thoughtful introspection about how we incorporate ideas on diversity into our academic and everyday experience.

Collage materials and snacks will be provided. No collage experience required. All artistic levels welcome!

RSVP to erin.sirett@mail.mcgill.ca by Sunday November 15th!

The Faculty of Education will be hosting a Breakfast and Lecture ‘Applied Human Development and Well-being’ next Friday, October 16th from 9:00-11:00 am in the Education building, Jack Cram Auditorium (Room 129). Fellowship Mentors

McGill’s Office for Graduate and Postdoctoral Students has provided funding for the Faculty of Education to help prepare graduate students to apply for and receive fellowships. With this in mind, we now have six PhD students chosen as fellowship mentors available to meet with graduate students (free of charge!). The role of these mentors is to help other students identify a variety of fellowship opportunities and to submit applications throughout the academic year. You can access the profiles of these six mentors – with award history and research interests – in past e-mails or you can contact Ms. Mahdieh Zamani for more information mahdieh.zamani@mcgill.ca.
