Student Profiles

Gillwoo Lee

I am Gillwoo Lee and originally from South Korea. I am having the second academic year in 2009-2010 in the doctoral program at McGill. I am currently working with Dr. Mary Maguire and Dr. Mela Sarkar. My research area and interest is to raise issues for neo-colonial discourses and practices in English language educational policy and planning, specifically in the Korean context.

TEN FUN FACTS

Where do you call home?
I call home where I do feel comfortable with my own stuff such as people, language, car, food, etc.

What is your favourite food?
I have some favourite foods such as Vietnamese rice noodle, Chinese dim sum, Japanese Sushi, Korean chicken soup, and lasagna.

What do you like most about being a student at McGill?
There are many advantages of being a student at Mcgill but one of them is there is no particular pressure to take many courses either to do research or to graduate. The load for school work is manageable. It may be expected to increase productivity and efficiency for work that students are engaged in.

What do you like least about being a student at McGill?
As a student from overseas, I have linguistic limitations of speaking and writing all the time. In particular, Mcgill does not provide ‘writing center’ where international students or even local students are able to get academic advice for writing specifically. There are courses for graduate writing but they are easily filled out. More courses for writing should be open or writing center should be provided at least.

What is your favourite thing to do when your nose isn’t buried in an academic book or journal?
I enjoy cooking. Cooking is challenging but fun! I like the most when people enjoy the food I cook but it rarely happens. A long way to go!

What surprised you the most about being a graduate student?

Do you have a nickname?
Nope!

What is your favourite restaurant in Montreal?
Schwartz’s smoke beef has no competition!

How do you feel about winter?
Painfully freezing that I never experienced back in my country.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wished to be a teacher. My first English teacher at the junior high inspired me to be an English teacher in the future.

David Tang

David Tang is a doctoral student in the School of Information Studies, and his research interests focus on the interdisciplinary study of Knowledge Translation. His area of specialization include business analysis and development, and computerized data analysis. David has studied and worked in China and Canada, gaining diverse professional experiences (e.g., research institute, family business, multi-national company, engineer, analyst, manager). Outside of academia, David loves cooking and he has recently mastered the making of an old-time Chinese street snack.
