Environmental Supports
- International Resilience Project
Within the study of environmental supports for youth at-risk, Dr. Heath has served as a contributor to the International Resilience Project (IRP) since 2004; a project directed by Dr. Michael Ungar at Dalhousie University. The IRP is a cross-cultural study of the aspects that support resilience in youth at-risk. The purpose of the IRP is to develop a better, more culturally sensitive understanding of how youth around the world effectively cope with the adversities that they face in life. The IRP uses a unique cross-cultural approach that employs both quantitative and qualitative research methods to examine individual, interpersonal, family, community and cultural factors associated with building resilience in youth around the world (see www.resilienceproject.org for additional information). The IRP includes researchers from 14 different countries and has achieved international recognition. Our research team's particular interest in the IRP is two-fold. First, to understand the common elements in the environment that support adaptive functioning in the face of adversity across widely divergent cultures. Second, through involvement with this team we are offered the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues working with youth at-risk around the world.
