Non-Suicidal Self-Injury
- Self-injury among university students
Several of our research projects have involved the study of function and associated risk factors of NSSI in university students. Using screening measures in large first-year university courses, we identified students who had engaged in NSSI. In two separate studies, it was found that 8-11% of first year university students admitted to engaging in NSSI and there were no significant gender differences (Holly, Heath, Toste, & Schaub, 2007; Heath, Toste, Nedecheva, & Charlebois, 2007; Nedecheva, Heath, Holly, & Zinck, 2006; Toste, Nedecheva, Holly, & Heath, 2006). Follow-up studies were consequently conducted with each cohort through online interview in order to explore the factors and function of the behaviour in more detail. We are continuing to analyze, write, and disseminate results of these two large scale projects, in addition to preparing for continued data collection in this area.
