For Users of Cable Internet and Bell Sympatico
Please note that the VPN server has been upgraded to support Windows XP clients.
Those of you who were using the test VPN server (132.216.1.1) as a temporary solution for Windows XP should return to using this upgraded production VPN server (inside.mcgill.ca or 132.216.1.254). There is no functional advantage to using the test VPN server since the production and test servers are now running the same level of code.
To this end, the test VPN server will be shut down on Tuesday, April 23, 2002.
For assistance in switching back to the production VPN server, contact the Help Desk (help@mcgill.ca or 398-3700) or refer to our general VPN documentation at http://www.mcgill.ca/ncs/access/remote/vpn/

McGill Lecture Series: "Public Memory, Citizenship and History Education
History is changing for Canadians. The ever-growing popularity of museums, historical films, heritage houses and genealogical research reminds us that history is more than war and governments. The past seems to exert an uncanny appeal for those of us trying to understand who we are and where we want to go by knowing more about where we have come from. McGill University is hosting a series of seven free public lectures that examine the varied and contradictory meanings that history or "Public Memory" -- holds for contemporary Canadians, both inside and outside the history classroom. The series will be taped by CBC Radio I program “Ideas” for possible broadcast in the Fall.
The first lecturer in the series "Public Memory, Citizenship and History Education" is esteemed McGill University Professor Desmond Morton, author of 37 books about Canadian history, including best-sellers like A Short History of Canada. His talk, entitled "Canadian History: What’s the Big Deal?" begins at 7 pm this Thursday, April 18 at the Jack Cram Auditorium in the Faculty of Education, McGill University, 3700 McTavish St. Everyone is welcome.
For further information about this lecture, and others in the series, please see www.education.mcgill.ca/events
