On behalf of Dean Ghosh, I am pleased to welcome Ms. Kathleen VanderNoot to the Dean's Office. Kathleen will be on a developmental assignment and she will be the Faculty of Education, Banner Finance Training & Liaison Officer effective May 1st, 2003.

Kathleen comes to us from the McGill Law Library with extensive experience in Administration. Please join me in welcoming Kathleen to the Faculty of Education.

2 Elections for Staff Representative to Faculty Council

3 Outstanding Dissertation Award - National Council on Problem Gambling

Congratulations to Jeff Powell, who is the 2003 recipient of the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Council of Problem Gambling.

Jeff completed his doctoral studies in February and has been invited to present a paper based on his dissertation at the National Conference of Problem Gambling to be held in June in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Council gives awards annually at the doctoral and masters levels for research "that has the potential to contribute to our scientific knowledge and clinical understanding of problem and pathological gambling behavior."

Previous award winners from McGill have been Rina Gupta (Dissertation Award, 1999), Karen Hardoon (Masters Thesis Award, 1999), and Jennifer Felsher (Masters Thesis Award, 2002).

4 Wireless Network Update

To all wireless network users:

Please be advised that starting on May 1st, you will have to update the NetConnect application in order to continue to use wireless service at McGill. When you start your laptop within a McGill wireless area, NetConnect will pop-up and will request an upgrade: "NetConnect not up-to-date, please install new version"

  • Click OK, and you will be redirected to a web page called "NetConnect Upgrade"
  • Click on "Download" to save the installation package on your desktop
  • Once downloaded, simply double-click on the NetConnect installation icon
  • Select the option "upgrade" when asked by the installation software
  • After the installation in complete you are ready to connect to wireless as usual
