1 Banner Upgrade

Here are a few notes about the banner upgrade this weekend.

- Student applications (admissions) is also affected - unavailable Feb 7 17:00 - Feb 10 09:00.

- The usual overnight grade roll process on Friday evening will not occur as a result of the upgrade which begins at 5 pm Friday. That means that students who withdraw from a course on Friday, or staff who enter grades on students' records on Friday, will not see these grades on the advising transcript until after the normal grade roll on Monday evening.

- We are working on a short handout about any changes to SIS client forms while we are in the process of updating the How-To and Step-by-Step documents. We will send this out to this listserv before Monday.

That's all for now,

2 DreamCatching 2003

To the faculty/students...

A wonderful opportunity exists for education faculty and pre-service teachers interested in gaining new insight into mathematics and science education. DreamCatching 2003 is a conference taking place in Montreal from February 19-22, 2003. Concordia University's Native Access to Engineering Program is sponsoring the event. Its focus is on cultural implications and considerations of instruction particularly with First Nation's students and other ethnically-diverse learners. Experts from the U.S. and across Canada will present to small groups of participants in sessions designed to be interactive and hands-on. A special student registration rate of $25 a day (Canadian) is offered (food throughout the day is included). Faculty can attend one day at a reduced rate if they wish. Please encourage your students to take advantage this great opportunity. Please come yourself to see what they are learning.

For more information please access the website http://nativeaccess.com/ and follow the DreamCatching 2003 links. People can download the registration form and students should make sure they indicate they are registering as such.

I can be reached at 514 848 4039 or by email at jbarta@coe.usu.edu.

Thanks for your interest and support.

4 Seminar Series: The Arts in Education

The Department of Integrated Studies in Education along with The Seminar and Conference Grants Committee is pleased to invite you to come and hear Ann Patteson, PhD Candidate, Queens University, Faculty of Education who will speak on Resistance, Romance and Renewal: Teacher Development Through Art-making, Thursday, February 6, 2003, in the Jack Cram Auditorium, 3:30-5:00 PM.

The path of romance is rarely smooth, yet many teachers emerge from their art making with renewed energy and verve, along with a commitment to the arts in education. Ann Patteson will talk about her work with teacher development through extensive art making. She describes that development as often consisting of the discernable, but not linear, stages of "Resistance," "Romance," and "Renewal." Ms. Patteson will explain how initial resistance can give way to a romantic enthrallment with artistic processes and products.

Ms. Patteson has been spurred on in her work by her involvement with and passion for the arts, as well as by concern for teachers' well-being and for the critical role teachers play in bringing the arts to their students.

Everyone is welcome!

Dr. Joan Russell
Director, Music Education
Department of Integrated Studies in Education
