1 Collaborative Research Projects in the U.K.

Attention all Professors with Collaborative Research Projects in the U.K.

We have received the following request from Associate Vice Principal Ian Butler.

If you have a collaborative research project with colleagues in the U. K. please provide the information requested to Associate Dean Maguire by March 17, 2003.

In early April, VP (Research) Louise Proulx will be part of a Quebec mission to the U.K. She has been asked to identify some of the U.K. universities with which McGill faculty members have on-going research collaborations. This information will enable some matches to be made with a selection of U.K. universities with which the Quebec Mission can meet.

To this end, it would be greatly appreciated it if you would circulate this message on your list-serves to the Chairs and Directors in your Faculty asking them to distribute it as widely as possible to their colleagues.

If any faculty members do have such existing research collaborations with U.K. universities, please ask them to send a note to me immediately at ian.butler@mcgill.ca with the following information:

Name of McGill Professor, Faculty and Department, School, etc.:

Name(s) of U.K. collaborators:

Name(s) of U.K. university(ies):

Brief (two-line) description(s) on on-going U.K. research collaboration(s):

Many thanks for your help in this venture.

3 Education Library Collection

I am pleased to inform you that the Education Library has recently received an additional $45,000 for collection development. This is one time funding from the University in recognition of the problem of annual inflation in the costs of library materials. This money has to be spent before the end of the present fiscal year.

I would very much appreciate receiving recommendations from you for new library materials. The Library Technical Services department would like most of the orders submitted by the last week in March. If necessary, I will place orders directly with the publishers until mid April.

To date, the Library has submitted orders for $20,000 of this new money. As this is one time funding most of the requests should be for library materials such as monographs, videos, CD-ROM's etc. Urgent requests for journal titles can also be submitted. We will place a subscription for one year, order the back-file as required, and hope that there will be sufficient funds in next year's budget to continue the subscription.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance in developing the Education Library's collection.

4 Kenyan Scholar Honoured - Dr. Sultan Somjee

East African ethnographer, Mr. Sultan H. Somjee was named among the 12 unique personalities in the recent UN nominations of the Unsung Heroes of Dialogue with Civilizations.

The UN nominations of the Unsung Heroes are from a spectrum of societies worldwide. The 12 nominees, whose profiles and projects will be shown on CNN and television stations around the world in several languages during the year, have "reached to the other" across the divide of cultural, political and faith boundaries.

Their special and innovative approaches on peacemaking is building bridges across people of different backgrounds, towards a better understanding of a pluralist society in situations of conflict.

In 1985, Dr. Somjee, who has a Ph.D. in Anthropology and Education in the Arts from McGill University, was instrumental in the introduction of teaching indigenous knowledge as value-based education through material culture at primary, secondary and tertiary level institution in Kenya. He has several publications to his credit and has written the only book on material culture of Kenya, for teachers and students.

Dr. Somjee also started the teaching museum of anthropology at the University of Nairobi's Chiromo Campus and has lectured at the university for many years. Through his numerous exhibitions, lectures, and writing, Dr. Somjee has brought humanity together.
