McGill Lecture Series "Public Memory, Citizenship and History Education"
This presentation will examine the potential for history education to contribute to citizenship in pluralist, participatory democracies. Debates over public memory often revolve around narrow interpretations of what constitutes "real" history, with each side attempting to establish its own approach as authoritative and dismissing all rivals. This presentation, on the other hand, will examine the multiple historical "acts" - such as analysis, moral judgment, and identification - that students are expected to perform in school, and the ways in which these reflect the varied, and frequently conflicting, public use of history. It will be argued that history education should not be evaluated by its adherence to an exclusive (and supposedly authoritative) body of content or procedures, but by its contribution to democratic citizenship - a contribution which can best be achieved through a focus on the goals of humanistic education.
The next lecturer in the series "Public Memory, Citizenship and History Education" is Keith Barton, Associate Professor in the Division of Teacher Education at the University of Cincinnati and Visiting Professor in the UNESCO Programme in Education for Pluralism, Human Rights and Democracy at the University of Ulster. His lecture, entitled "Committing Acts of History: Humanistic Education and Participatory Democracy" begins at 5:30 pm this Thursday, May 30th in the Jack Cram Auditorium of the Faculty of Education, McGill University, 3700 McTavish St. Everyone is welcome.
