Presentation - I am First A Human Being
All INSTRUCTORS ARE ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO ATTEND THIS PRESENTATION.
With Daniel Ormsby as Nelson Mandela and Yaelle Wittes as Krystyna Wituska
Set on different continents and in different periods of history, I Am First A Human Being presents two historical figures in a drama that transcends time and place, age and gender, race and ethnic origin. Using their own words, Nelson Mandela, the mature leader of Black South Africans in their struggle against apartheid and Krystyna Wituska, a young member of the Polish resistance against Hitler, tell the timeless, universal story of human dignity, moral courage, and love of life.
Nelson Mandela's role is based on his memoir, A Long Walk to Freedom: the Autobiography of Nelson Mandela. Imprisoned by the South African government for 27 years, Mandela remained a leader of African resistance from within the prison walls. Released in 1990, his victory culminated in a peaceful transition of power to a democratic government respecting equal rights of all and a Nobel Peace Prize.
Krystyna Wituska's role is based on I Am First A Human Being: The Prison Letters of Krystyna Wituska, published by Véhicule Press in 1997. Written over the course of a year in a Gestapo prison, the letters reveal an extraordinary personality marked by a youthful idealism and a serene maturity, by intelligence and humour, and by magnificent courage. I Am First A Human Being has been included in the curriculum of a number of schools and universities in Canada and the United States for studies in history, women’s studies, and human rights. Selected letters will be included in the new edition of Wall Tappings: An Anthology of Writings by Women Prisoners to be published by The Feminist Press in the United States.
