1 Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP) 2000 Reports and 2001 Applications 1

To: NSTP committee members, NSTP supervisors and Departmental Admin. Officers

Background:

Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) created the Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP) to provide funds to help offset the high cost of student field work in the North. Each participating University has an NSTP committee that coordinates a university application on behalf of the students seeking support. Small levels of funding (NSTP does not sole fund student projects - supervisors are expected to contribute to the work of students applying for NSTP support) are available for Canadian graduate and senior undergraduate students involved in northern research. In consultation with their supervisor, each student prepares an application that is submitted to the University NSTP Committee. The Committee reviews these applications to ensure they meet the INAC requirements and to make sure the proposed research meets a minimum standard for McGill University. The students and supervisors are responsible for making sure the appropriate Research Licences, Permits and Ethics Review are obtained (these are not required at the time of application but must be in place before an account can be set up for the student). Students and supervisors should consult the NSTP web site at http://www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/nstp/electro_e.html for both application and report forms (download the pdf file, fill it out and print it ).

Deadlines

The McGill 2000 reports and 2001 applications are due on November 12 to allow our committee to meet, review reports and applications and request revisions before submitting the university report and application to Ottawa (INAC deadline is Dec 1). A limited number of hard copies of these forms are available.
