3 New Staff Fitness Program

Research shows that a healthy workplace is good for both the institution and the individual. With this in mind, McGill’s senior administration is supporting a new initiative to promote staff fitness. The University and the Department of Athletics have teamed up to present Fit@McGill, a Staff Fitness Program designed especially to appeal to McGill employees, whatever their rank or position.
Courses will be held daily over the lunch break and include Tai Chi, Hatha Yoga, Pilates (full body conditioning), a Walking Club, and other 45-minute low and high-impact classes. Half of the Staff Fitness Program will be offered in the Sports Complex, the other half will be available on the Lower Campus. Financially supported by the University as a pilot project (and reportedly a first in Canada), enrolment is on a first-come, first-served basis and will cost staff members a mere $11.50 (tax included) for each 13-week course. Registration for more than one course will be subject to availability. Classes run from mid-September to December, from January to early April, and mid-April to June. Discussions are also underway to offer a similar program on the Macdonald campus commencing January 2002.

The attached page briefly describes the courses being offered. Check out the Fit@McGill Newsletter and the Web site www.fit.mcgill.ca for further details and registration information. Register now for this exciting new program and experience the benefits of a more balanced lifestyle!

4 Monica Mak of CSAEMP Won the Best Documentary Video

On Wednesday August 29, 2001 at the Awards Ceremony of the 32nd Canadian Student Film and Video Festival section of the Montreal World Film Festival Monica Mak won Best Documentary video for Unwanted Images: Gender-Based Violence in the New South Africa "for making a film with an important subject matter and for poetically expressing modern horror and through its imagery showing how the horror has affected an entire community."

Monica Mak has been working with McGill University’s Canada-South Africa Education Management Program (CSAEMP) for the past year. She is also a doctoral student in the Department of Communications at McGill. She completed an M.A. thesis on the topic of the National Film Board of Canada's racial equity initiatives. She recently directed and produced another video as part of CSAEMP entitled "Scoring The Goal”. This zany piece focuses on young women's development of assertiveness and leadership skills through the sport of soccer.

Claudia Mitchell, Associate Professor at the McGill Department of Educational Studies and Program Director of CSAEMP produced the video. The script was adapted from CSAEMP’s Opening Our Eyes - Addressing Gender-Based Violence in South African Schools: A Module for Educators (June 2001). Unwanted Images was developed as part of a larger Managing Gender Based Violence project within CSAEMP. This program was aimed specifically at supporting the democratization and transformation of South African schools, and particularly whole school approaches to quality school management. It was recognized that within a complex context such as post-apartheid South Africa, gender-based violence was a highly significant educational and societal issue. Unwanted Images, was launched in November, 2000 has been screened at many professional workshops and seminars in Canada, the UK and South Africa including the Men's Forum - part of the 16 Days Campaign which took place in Pretoria South Africa in December, 2000, as well as at the Montreal World Film Festival in August 2001.
