1 Information Technology News: We’re wireless!

As I announced at the recent Faculty Assembly, most of the first floor of the Education building is now wireless. This means that with the addition of a wireless card (about $95) a laptop computer can be instantly connected to the internet to surf or check e-mail etc. Three pick-up points have been installed in the Curriculum Lab, the Library, and the Lobby. A number of desks have been installed in the lobby as a place for students with laptops to work. Bear in mind that this wireless reaches through walls and ceilings to some extent which means that it may be possible for some wireless access in classrooms to be possible including the Jack Cram Auditorium. Professors should note that those eager students who you think are copying your words of wisdom into their laptops may actually be surfing the internet in your classroom and/or sending notes to other students. (Every technology has its down side!)

4 Information Session on Violence Prevention - Programs of the Red Cross

In collaboration with the Red Cross (Quebec division) and The Coalition of Education, Health, Social Work and Community Services, we are pleased to invite you to the Montreal Children’s Hospital on October 8th, 2002 to hear a presentation by the Red Cross of their violence prevention programs – Respect-Ed – on dating violence, taxing, violence in sports and sexual abuse of children and adolescents. These sessions which will describe their innovative and effective programs already in place across Canada and just being introduced in Quebec, are staffed by individuals trained by the Red Cross.

Those of us planning and offering front-line multidisciplinary services to children and youth have long been frustrated by the lack of prevention activity in our communities so we welcome this opportunity to cooperate with the Red Cross in introducing these outreach programs to you and hope it will enable other partnerships to be developed in the area of prevention.

There will be two information sessions during the afternoon of Tuesday, October 8, 2002. Both will take place in the Amphitheatre of the Montreal Children’s Hospital (D-182) and there is no charge for this conference. Parking in the hospital parking lot can be difficult so alternatives are Plaza Alexis-Nihon or the Forum Pepsi.

Session in French: 1:15 – 3 pm
Session in English: 3:15 – 5 pm

For this initial meeting we are inviting staff and administrators from various parts of the public and private sectors, e.g. from education, health, social service and the community with particular emphasis on schools, CLSC’s and community organizations. As limited space is available, we would ask you to kindly RSVP Maria at 514-412-4455 by October 4/02 if you and/or your staff plan on attending.

We look forward to greeting you on October 8, 2002 at which time a display of Red Cross prevention materials will be available for your perusal.

Dept Head: Pediatric Social Work
Chairperson: The Coalition of Education, Health, Social Work and Community Services

7 Teach Canada Educational Network

A new education portal, especially designed for Canadian educators, was officially launched on September 1, 2002. The name of this new website is Teach Canada and it is located at http://www.teachcanada.ca.

Teach Canada offers teachers free newsletters, message boards, a chat room, lesson plans, a searchable web directory of sites that are of particular interest to Canadian educators, a calendar of events across Canada, and much more. This site strives to offer a wide range of resources to make teachers' lives less stressful and although it include links to a wide variety of websites from all over the world, they have made every effort to provide as much Canadian content as possible.
