According to participants at a recent APA conference on the Teaching of Educational Psychology, these are the top ten things that teachers, parents, and legislators should know from educational psychology.
 
1. Educational practice should be based on valid research
2. Knowledge is actively constructed and based on prior learning
3. People learn differently at different rates because their needs and abilities differ
4. Instruction must be developmentally appropriate and engaging
5. Family and environment strongly influence learning
6. Abilities are both heritable and mutable
7. Quality assessment involves multiple measures and informed interpretation
8. Teaching is a complex activity that requires time for planning and reflection
9. Critical thinking skills can and should be taught
10. Learning occurs in caring communities that honour it.
