Names Lecture

During my lecture on physical attractiveness, physical stature,
and names, some people chuckle when I mention the great lady of
Texas named Ima Hogg.

Here are the facts:

Ima Hogg was the daughter of James Stephen Hogg (1851-1906).
onetime governor of Texas.  He had three sons and ONE daughter.
He named his daughter Ima when she was born on July 10, 1882.
She died in 1975.

Her unusual first name originated with her uncle, Thomas E. Hogg,
a confederate captain who wrote a poem about the Civil War, "The
Fate of Marvin," in which the heroine was named Ima.  This would
seem to imply that he did not name her out of devilishness.

I have learned that the inventor of the Lear jet,
and the car radio, William P. Lear, named his daughter Shanda.
