Obituary: David Milligan

Mr David Milligan , of the Merchant Navy, who was lost on H.M.A.H.S. Centaur, was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs David Milligan, of Seaforth, England. He came to Australia in 1925. He was for some time a member of the St. Stephen's Harriers and, later, transferred to the Malvern Harriers. For the last nine years he has made his home with his brother, Corporal William Milligan, R.A.A.F., and his wife and family, in Heath avenue, Oakleigh. While a resident of Oakleigh he endeared himself to many. He will always be remembered for his gay personality, generosity, and good will to all. He also had two other brothers in England - Alf, R.A.F., and Jack, R.A.S.C., M.E From a survivor, Mr. A. Ramage B.A., who was with David when the treacherous blow struck, his brother obtained this ...(text missing)...just come off watch and had gone below to the mess-room for a cup of coffee. Dave was pouring the coffee, when the ship was hit. We all looked at each other, then dashed to ward the other chaps in their bunks, grabbed our life-belts and dashed up on deck to our life-boat stations. "I can hear Dave now. He said, "now don't panic! Just take things quietly!" "Dave went to his boat with five other chaps to get it ready to lower into the water but before they could do anything, the ship started to sink. The last I remember was seeing the rafts break loose and they slid down right into the path of the men working on the life-boat. At that moment I jumped into the water. "That's the last I saw of poor Dave, but I thought he would be alright as he was a good swimmer. I was very disappointed when I saw he was not one of the survivors." Mr. David Milligan was also a member of the Luxor Masonic Lodge. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
